Week of August 23, 2021 - Weekly Meal Ideas


Did you know that today is “National Hot and Spicy Food Day”?!  Many of our Eat REAL America members know that we LOVE the flavor a little heat can add to a recipe, and this is ideal to celebrate Hatch Chile Season and for several of the ideas in our weekly meal ideas this week!

So many delicious ways to enjoy spicy foods…Spicy Orange Chicken, Hatch Chile and Prosciutto Pizza, Prosciutto Wrapped Jalapeños, and the Watermelon Basil Gazpacho can include a fresh jalapeno if you want to kick it up a notch!  Plus, so many more ideas on the website!  By the way, when it comes to prosciutto, a little goes a long way and you should look for just two ingredients:  pork and salt (no nitrates or nitrites).

Why are we so passionate about eating in-season?  Because eating seasonal produce such as summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, okra and fresh juicy tomatoes means eating these foods when they are at their best!  Then, once you start to feel like you have had enough, you realize September (and Fall!) is right around the corner with winter squash, crisp apples, pumpkin and more!  But wait!…we are still trying to squeeze as much out of summer as possible!

If you feel like you are swimming in fresh tomatoes, the Tempeh Sloppy Joes and the Gazpacho are ideal ways to enjoy them!  And, the sides and quick and easy ideas this week are all incredibly good — pick up okra, peppers, fresh corn on the cob and sweet potatoes (ideally, from the farmers’ market) and you will be all set to enjoy the Orange Balsamic Roasted Okra, Fresh Corn Salad and Southwest Sweet Potato Lettuce Wraps!
