Week of August 18, 2014 - Weekly Meal Ideas


We were talking to someone at the Farmer’s Market last Saturday who had never tried spaghetti squash.  That inspired us to include a crazy good spaghetti squash recipe in this week’s meal ideas.  If you have never tried it, now is the perfect time!  We have a quick tip on how to cook it and, according to one of our Get REAL Wichita members, “The Spaghetti Squash Noodle Bowl is one of my favorites.  The Lime Peanut Sauce made this dish high end restaurant quality.  I’ve added the recipe to my list of things to make when I want to impress company!”  Plus, the BBQ Tilapia and Sweet Potato Tacos are an excellent reason to visit Chile Slinger BBQ at the Old Town Farmer’s Market for some BBQ rub and sauce!  We wouldn’t include ideas we don’t like (and, trust me, there are some that don’t make the cut), but each week we seem to have a couple of favorites – the EBLT is fantastic and the Chicago-inspired Slow Cooker Italian Beef Sandwiches are incredibly good with the Giardiniera mixture on top!  And the Summer Peach and Tomato Salad is a great and simple way to enjoy the in-season local produce!  We hope you enjoy and we look forward to your feedback!

  • Jimmy with Kan-Grow has several delicious fresh produce options including okra, kale and some great cherry tomatoes.  Plus, we can’t seem to get enough of his Yum-Yum mix!
  • Leland Garden will have kale for the Spaghetti Squash Noodle Bowl and okra for the Blackened Okra with Red Rice.
  • All it takes is a few quality ingredients to make something taste amazing — pick up peaches and tomatoes from Southwest Corner Farm for the Summer Peach and Tomato Salad to see what we mean!  Their tomatoes are also perfect for the EBLT!
  • Phil’s Farm will have you covered with chicken for the Balsamic Watermelon Chicken Salad and bacon and eggs for the EBLT!
  • Graze the Prairie will have grass-fed beef to use in the Slow Cooker Italian Beef Sandwiches.
  • Natural to the Corr is the place to get a farm fresh juicy watermelon for the Balsamic Watermelon Chicken Salad!
  • Pick up some fresh greens from Elm Lane Farm for the Salad with Spicy Addictive Pecans and Berries, Balsamic Watermelon Chicken Salad and, of course, lettuce for the EBLT!
  • Have you tried the Limited Edition Blueberry Pineapple Jam from Steve’s Jams and Jellies?  It is just one of their many fantastic flavors of jams and jellies!

Plan ahead to make sure you have a chilled bottle of white wine in the fridge for the hot temperatures next week.  Beyond Napa in Old Town and Grace Hill Winery are a couple of great places to use your discount to pick up a bottle or two of great-tasting vino!
