Why We Like It

Air popped popcorn is a great snack!  All you have to do is add a little olive oil (or coconut oil) and sea salt -- YUM!  This recipe jazzes it up a little more and adds dark chocolate drizzled on top -- EVEN BETTER!  A delicious adult version would be to also add a little cayenne pepper and cinnamon!

Pop the Popcorn:

  • 8 cups popcorn (air-popped would be best)

Pop the popcorn and place in a large bowl.

Season the Popcorn:

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (or melted coconut oil)
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt (or more to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (OPTIONAL)
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne red pepper (OPTIONAL)

Add to the popcorn (including the cinnamon and cayenne if using) and stir to combine.

Add the Chocolate:

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (60% cacao or higher)
  • 1/2 Tbsp coconut oil

Spread a sheet of wax paper (or parchment paper) on your kitchen counter or on a large baking sheet.  Spread the popcorn out onto the wax paper.  Add the chocolate and coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl and heat on high for 20 seconds at a time, stirring in between until the chocolate chips are melted.  Using a fork, dip the fork into the chocolate and drizzle on top of the popcorn.  Let the popcorn cool for about 15 minutes, the chocolate will harden as it cools.

Serve and Enjoy!

When the chocolate has cooled and dried, break apart and enjoy. You can store any leftover popcorn in an airtight container.

Quick Tips

This recipe is a great reason to purchase an air-pop popcorn popper.  They are simple and easy to use, and the best part is you know exactly what is in your popcorn!  An olive oil sprayer also works great for this recipe.  They are very handy for popcorn!

When you use dark chocolate, adding a little fat to the chocolate (like coconut oil or butter) will make the coating creamy and firm but not brittle.

Other great tasting flavor combinations:

Pizza Popcorn – mix in a food processor 3 Tbsp of oil, 2 Tbsp sun-dried tomatoes, 1 tsp dried basil, 1 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes, and 1/2 tsp salt.  Drizzle over popped popcorn and gently stir to combine.  You can also add 1/4 cup of grated parmesan cheese!

Sweet Spicy Popcorn – in a small bowl, mix together 1 Tbsp oil, 2 Tbsp maple syrup, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp cayenne, and 1/2 tsp garlic powder.  Drizzle over popped popcorn and gently stir to combine.

Honey Vanilla Popcorn – in a small bowl, mix together 2 Tbsp melted butter (or olive oil), 1 Tbsp honey, 1/4 tsp vanilla and 1/2 tsp salt.  Drizzle over popped popcorn and gently stir to combine.
