Why We Like It

You can grill all kinds of fruits for a fantastic summer treat, so why not a grilled banana split?!  The dark chocolate chips wedged into the banana melt into a creamy deliciousness and the tender juicy sliced strawberries make the perfect topping!  Pair with a scoop of ice cream and toasted nuts and summer dessert doesn't get much better than that!  We have even enjoyed this for breakfast, but that's just between all of us!

Preheat the Grill to Medium High

Prepare the Strawberries:

  • 6 strawberries (stem trimmed and sliced)
  • 1 tsp white balsamic vinegar (or regular balsamic vinegar)

Place the strawberries on a piece of foil, about 8 inches long.  Drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Top with another piece of foil and seal the edges to create a foil packet.  Set aside.

(The foil packet helps you capture the juicy sauce from the strawberries, but if you want to skip the foil packet and balsamic vinegar, you can also grill the strawberries whole directly on the grill grates.  Then, slice after grilling.)

Prepare the Bananas:

  • 2 bananas (removed from their peel and left whole)
  • 2 to 3 Tbsp dark chocolate chips

Place the bananas on a piece of foil, about 8 inches long.

Cut a slit lengthwise into each whole banana, without cutting all the way through the banana.

Wedge about 1 to 1.5 Tbsp of chocolate chips into the slit in each banana.

Grill the Bananas and Strawberries:

Place the foil packet with the strawberries (or whole strawberries) on the grill.  Also, place the foil with the bananas on the grill.  Grill for 5-7 minutes or until as done as you want them.

Toast or Grill the Nuts:

  • 1/4 cup walnuts (chopped)

To toast the nuts, you can either toast them in a skillet on the stove or grill them.

On the stove, toast the nuts in a small dry skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until toasted and fragrant.

On the grill, place the nuts on a small piece of foil and grill for 3-5 minutes until toasted and browned.

Serve and Enjoy!

  • 2 scoops natural vanilla ice cream (about 1/2 cup, or plain nonfat Greek yogurt)

Serve layered with a banana, sliced strawberries, a scoop of ice cream (or yogurt) and toasted nuts.
